Finnsheep

FinnsheepFinnish Landrace or Finnish, because they are in their home country of Finland, were imported for the first time in North America by the University of Manitoba, Canada in 1966. Since then, only a few were imported by the Department of Agriculture United States (1968) and private breeders in Canada. Icelandic 1The modern Icelandic sheep is a direct descendant of the sheep to the island by Viking settlers in the ninth and tenth century. It’s like the short tail and northern Europe in relation to races such as Finns, Romanov, Shetland sheep and Spelsau Swedish Landrace, which are all descendants of this type of sheep that was predominant in Scandinavia and the British Isles from the eighth and ninth century. BREED CHARACTERISTICS

Icelandics are one of the oldest breeds in the world. Developed over the last thousand years with no crossing with other sheep breeds, they are one of the North European short-tailed race of sheep, which includes Finnsheep, Romanov, Shetland, Spelsau, and Swedish Landrace.

They are a meat breed. The most eye catching aspect of the breed is the fabulous colors they have. The combination of patterns and colors alone give 15 different looks. In addition to that, over 90 different spotting patterns are recognized. Read the rest of this entry »
