One of the oldest British breeds of wool long, the Border Leicester was imported from England to Canada in the mid-nineteenth century. BERRICHONNE OF CHER

This large sized sheep was developed in the arid southwest of
France in the late nineteenth century by crossing Spanish with English breeds
Merino wool long. Females are frequently used in cross formation where its force
and allow the production of heavy lambs, with no excess fat at any time of year.
The sheep are used as terminal to improve carcass characteristics.

Grazing habits:

The South Suffolk

South Suffolk

South Suffolk are one of the lesser known sheep breeds. Of New Zealand origin, they were first imported into Australia. They were created by George Gould of Canterbury (NZ) from crosses of Southdowns and Suffolk, the consequent progeny being interbred. These two parent breeds already carried a close relationship, the Suffolk resulting from crossing the Southdown over the old Norfolk Horn during the late eighteenth century. Shropshire Sheep

The Shropshire sheep is a British short wool hornless breed. It is medium in size and has a soft black face, ears and nostrils, and black feet and legs. The Shropshire breed society was the first sheep breed society set up in the United Kingdom .

Mainly used as a prime lamb producer, the Shropshire ram makes a good sire for producing quick growing lambs. They are often crossed with merinos to produce first cross lambs. Its fleece is dense and heavy and is a Downs type wool. Read the rest of this entry »
